2011 Workshops

Compelling landscape paintings result when the artist knows how to capture both the sense of place and their feelings about the subject. In the workshops, we will work on the elements that let us translate our vision.

Plein Air Oil Workshops include:

  • Instructor demonstrations
  • Daily painting at various coastal and ranch locations
  • Group critique and private instruction at the easel
  • Value and color exercises

Creating paintings with the intent of taking them to a larger thought in the studio, as well as completing plein air paintings ready for exhibition. All aspects of Plein Air Painting with Intent will be covered. This class will be directed to each artist on a personal basis helping them achieve success at their level of ability. Be prepared to start early or work late. (All artists are responsible for their own gear and set up of equipment and are encouraged to be comfortable with their equipment in order to focus on painting.) (Mon-Fri), 9:30 AM - 4:30 PM, 15 students max.

June 13-17, 2011, Creating Studio Paintings from Plein Air Paintings and Photo references.

This class is for the experienced landscape painter that works on location and is ready to create the larger studio paintings. The artist needs to have paintings created on location as well as reference material from the location. This class is based on the idea that the artist is ready to create larger well-composed paintings capturing a sense of place as well as a mood, in the artist’s voice. Composing from studies and reference material, we will work with intent, organization of thought, palette, composition and materials, to create paintings with the artist’s voice. Students must have knowledge of Plein Air painting. Recommended reading is Tolley’s book entitled Oil Painter's Solution Book: Landscapes, available at www.bn.com and www.amazon.com as she will be teaching techniques from this book during the workshops. (Mon-Fri), 9:30 AM - 4:30 PM, 15 students max.

Acadia Workshop Center, Bernard, Maine—"Creating the Plein Air Painting with Intent"

September 26-30th, 2011, (Mon-Fri), $650, some experience required

This class will address understanding intent, organization of thought, canvas, palette and materials to create a successful field painting. Seeing the abstract and painting from the abstract large shapes to finishing in a representational manner will be covered. In some studies the focus will be capturing light, color and values, in others the focus will be will designing the canvas from the elements in the landscape. Artists are encouraged to work small in order to start and complete a painting on site. Creating a painting in the plein air style inside the studio from reference material and the field sketches will be demonstrated during the week. What the artists learn in this class will help them to paint wherever they live and work. Tolley teaches with directness, humor and kindness and provides a class where artists can grow in their journey.

The class is taught by demonstration and individual work at each artist’s easel. Group and individual critiques will be conducted during the week. Being familiar with Tolley's book “Oil Painter’s Solution Book: Landscapes” will be helpful. Each artist must be comfortable with their own gear. Workshops are fast paced. The paintings created in this workshop will be great reference material back in the studio or in the field.
